LightCounting, a leading market organization in the optical communications industry, has announced the latest version of its 2022 Global Optical Module Top 10 list. The list shows that Chinese optical module manufacturers are getting stronger, with a total of seven finalists and only three overseas remaining on the list.
According to the list, Chinese optical module manufacturers in 2010 only Wuhan Telecom Devices Ltd (WTD, later merged with Optotron Technology) was listed; in 2016, Hisense Broadband and Optotron Technology were two finalists; in 2018, still only Hisense Broadband and Optotron Technology were two finalists.
In 2022, Suntrust (tied for 1st), Huawei (ranked 4th), Optotek (ranked 5th), Hisense Broadband (ranked 6th), Xinyi Sheng (ranked 7th), Huagong Zhengyuan (ranked 8th) and Solstice Optoelectronics (ranked 10th) were shortlisted. It is worth mentioning that Solstice Optoelectronics was acquired by a Chinese company, so it is already a Chinese optical module manufacturer in this period.
The remaining three spots were reserved for Coherent (which acquired Finisar), Cisco (which acquired Acacia) and Intel. LightCounting changed its statistical rules last year to exclude optical modules made by equipment vendors from the analysis, so Huawei, Cisco and other equipment vendors were also able to make the list.
LightCounting noted that in 2022, four vendors - Suntronics, Coherent, Cisco and Huawei - held more than 50 percent of the global optical module market share, with Suntronics and Coherent each earning nearly $1.4 billion in revenue.
Cisco and Huawei are expected to be the new leaders in the optical module market given their tremendous resources in network systems. Among them, Huawei is the leading supplier of 200G CFP2 coherent DWDM modules. Cisco's business benefits from the first shipments of 400ZR/ZR+ optical modules.
Optical Xun Technology and Hisense Broadband both exceed $600 million in optical module revenue in 2022. Xinyisheng and Huagong Zhengyuan, on the other hand, have been success stories for Chinese optical module vendors in recent years, moving up into the global Top 10 rankings by selling optical modules to cloud computing companies.
Broadcom (which acquired Avago) fell off the list this period and is still ranked as high as No. 6 globally in 2021. optical modules are not a priority business for Broadcom, including Intel, but both companies are developing jointly packaged optical devices, LightCounting said.
