The optical attenuator is used to provide flexible control of the optical signal power in the test setup. The primary application is to determine the sensitivity of an optical receiver by measuring the variation of the BER with the input signal power. The N7766A and N7768A provide 2 or 4 attenuator channels for multimode fiber optic units with 50 µm or 62.5 µm fiber ports, respectively. By monitoring the output power, precise and stable power settings can be achieved at any input power. Using convenient bias parameters, the set power can be made to match the signal after other optical devices in the test set path.
