The optical attenuator instrument is used to flexibly control the power level of the optical signal in a test system. The primary application is to determine the sensitivity of an optical receiver by measuring the BER versus the input signal power. The N7766A and N7768A provide 2 or 4 attenuator channels, respectively, for multimode fiber systems and are available with 50 µm, 62.5 µm or 80 µm fiber ports. Output power is monitored for accurate and stable power settings independent of input power. Convenient bias parameters allow the power to be set to correspond to the signal after other optical components in the setup path.
