GPON (Gigabit passive optical network) is a passive passive optical fibre network with the full name of Gigabit-capable PON. GPON service is an extension of BPON, which provides unprecedented high bandwidth (downlink rate of nearly 2.5Gbps) and its asymmetric characteristics are more suitable for the broadband data service market; it provides full service guarantee of QoS and carries ATM elements and (5Gbps) at the same time. Compared with other PON standards, GPON standard provides unprecedented high bandwidth (downlink rate of nearly 2.5Gbps), and its asymmetric characteristics are better adapted to the market of broadband data services; it provides full-service guarantee of QoS, and carries ATM signal elements and/or GEM frames at the same time, and it has the ability to provide service level, support QoS guarantee and full-service access; when carrying GEM frames, it is possible to map the TDM services into GEM frames, and it can use standard 8kHz(125kHz) to map TDM services into GEM frames, and use standard 8kHz (125kHz) to map GEM frames. When carrying GEM frames, TDM services can be mapped into GEM frames, and TDM services can be directly supported using standard 8kHz (125μs) frames. As a carrier-grade technology standard, GPON also provides protection mechanisms at the access network level and full OAM functionality. Its downlink maximum transmission rate can be as high as 2.488Gps, uplink maximum transmission rate up to 1.244Gbps, the transmission distance can be up to 20 to 37 kilometres, so it has a high bandwidth, high speed, high efficiency transmission, wide coverage, rich user interfaces, etc., and has been regarded by most operators as an ideal technology to achieve broadband and integrated transformation of access network services.
