The Anritsu MS9740B is a high-performance spectrum analyzer that can be used to measure the polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) of optical fibres.PMD is a transmission characteristic of optical fibres that affects the performance and stability of high-speed optical communication systems. To ensure the quality and reliability of your optical fibres, you need to test them for PMD on a regular basis.

The Anritsu MS9740B supports two PMD test methods: Stokes parametrization and polarisation state. Stokes parametrization is a baseline test method that measures the PMD coefficient and the dominant polarisation direction of an optical fibre. Polarimetry is an alternative test method that measures the PMD delay and polarisation dependent bandwidth of the fibre. You can choose the appropriate test method according to your testing needs and conditions.

In order to use the MS9740B for PMD testing, you need to prepare the following equipment and materials:

- An MS9740B spectrum analyser

- a tunable laser source (TLS), such as an Anritsu MG9638A

- A polarisation controller (PC), such as the Anritsu MP1763C

- A polarisation analyser (PA), e.g. Anritsu MP1764C

- An adjustable attenuator (VA), such as the Anritsu MP1762C

- A power meter (PM), such as the Anritsu ML2437A

- One optical fibre to be tested

- Some adapters and cables

Install PMD testing software for Anritsu MS9740B, such as Anritsu MX974014A. This software can help you set test parameters, control instruments, collect data, analyze results, generate reports, etc.

The specific test steps are as follows:

1. Connect the output port of TLS to the input port of the PC, the output port of the PC to the input port of the VA, the output port of the VA to the input port of the fiber under test, the output port of the fiber under test to the input port of the PA, and the output port of the PA to the input port of the MS9740B.

2. Connect the PM's probe to the VA's monitoring port and the PM's GPIB interface to the MS9740B's GPIB interface.

3. Turn on all instruments and wait for warm-up.

4. Run the PMD test software on the MS9740B and select the test method you want to use (Stokes parameter determination or polarization state method).

5. Set test parameters on the software interface, such as wavelength range, wavelength interval, resolution bandwidth, video bandwidth, etc.

6. Click the Start Test button, the software will automatically control TLS, PC, VA, PA and MS9740B to test and collect data.

7. After the test is completed, the software will automatically calculate and display the test results, such as PMD coefficient, PMD delay, polarization-related bandwidth, main polarization state direction, etc.

8. Test results and reports can be viewed, saved, printed or exported on the software interface.

Anritsu MS9740B supports the following test modes:

• Continuous Scan Mode: Continuously sweeps the spectrum within a set wavelength range and displays waveform plots and related parameters.

• Peak search mode: search for the peak of the spectrum in the set wavelength range, and display the peak wavelength, peak power, SMSR and other parameters.

• Multi-peak search mode: Search for multiple spectral peaks in a set wavelength range, and display parameters such as wavelength, power, SMSR and other parameters for each peak.

• Optical active device evaluation mode: According to different types of optical active devices (LD-module, DF-LD, FP-LD, LED, PMD, WDM, optical amplifier, WDM filter, etc.), the corresponding evaluation menu is provided, which can measure key evaluation items such as optical center wavelength, level, optical signal-to-noise ratio, spectral width and other key evaluation items at one time, and display the results on one screen.

• Pulse mode: The spectral characteristics of pulsed light sources can be measured, supporting repetition frequencies above 5 kHz and duty cycles above 1%.
