BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ericsson is expanding its production capacity in India after the supplier won a major deal to supply 5G equipment to Indian telecom operators.

Ericsson said the expansion is being carried out with local partner Jabil at its plant in Pune. The plant currently produces and manufactures 4G and 5G wireless devices as well as computing and microwave products. The expansion is aimed at manufacturing Ericsson's AIR 3219 and 3268 wireless devices, which integrate MIMO antenna technology.

Ericsson expects the expansion to create about 2,000 new jobs. The company has also set up a technology center designed to support new product launches, production engineering of new devices and local deployments.

Indian mobile operators Bharti Airtel and Jio have signed contracts with Ericsson for the supply of equipment for 5G networks. These operators recently acquired 5G spectrum in a government auction and initial network deployments are just beginning.

"With the launch of 5G in India, we are increasing our 5G telecom equipment capacity in Pune in a phased manner to support the network deployment of Indian telecom service providers." Nunzio Mirtillo, head of Ericsson's Southeast Asia, Oceania and India business, said in a statement. "Manufacturing in India is part of our global production footprint, which is spread across all continents. This footprint allows us to ensure a global, flexible and resilient supply chain to respond quickly to market and customer needs, and the Indian market benefits from this."

Although not specifically mentioned, the Indian government has been pushing its "Make in India" initiative, which aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing. This is becoming increasingly important for countries that want to better protect their supply chains and increase employment.
