Both Rhodes and Schwarz studied under Prof. Esau and received their doctorates from the Institute of Physics and Technology at the University of Jena in 1931. Due to their great interest in RF measurements, the two remained in contact after graduation. In addition to their normal work, the two physicists continued to experiment with the properties of gas discharges and together developed their first measuring instrument in 1932, an accurate frequency meter with wavelengths from 6 to 3600 meters.
