What is an optical module?


Optical module consists of optoelectronic devices, functional circuits and optical interfaces, etc. The optoelectronic devices include two parts: transmitting and receiving.


Simply put, the role of the optical module is to convert the electrical signal into an optical signal at the transmitting end, and then convert the optical signal into an electrical signal at the receiving end after transmission through optical fiber.


Working Principle of Optical Module

Optical Modules, as an important part of optical fiber communication, are optoelectronic devices that realize the function of photoelectric conversion and electro-optical conversion in the process of optical signal transmission.


Optical module works in the physical layer of OSI model and is one of the core devices in fiber optic communication system. It is mainly composed of optoelectronic devices (optical transmitter, optical receiver), functional circuits and optical interfaces, etc. Its main role is to realize the photoelectric conversion and electro-optical conversion functions in optical fiber communication. The transmitter interface inputs a certain code rate electrical signal, and after the internal driver chip processing by the driver semiconductor laser (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) emits the corresponding rate of modulated optical signal, through the fiber optic transmission, the receiver interface then converts the optical signal by the light detection diode into an electrical signal, and after the preamplifier output the corresponding code rate electrical signal.

The appearance structure of optical module

There are various types of optical modules, and the appearance structure varies, but the basic structure contains the following parts, as shown in Figure The appearance structure of a fiber optic module (SFP package is used as an example).

Protecting internal components, there are two main types of 1*9 enclosures and SFP enclosures.

Receiving Interface(Rx)

Fiber-optic receive interface.

Sending Interface(Tx)

Fiber optic transmitter interface.

Pull Handle Buckle

For unplugging optical modules, and for the convenience of identification, the color of the puller buckle corresponding to different wavelengths is also different.
